   Feet-to-Foot-Cot

Ensuring a Safe and Comfortable Sleep

Always place your baby to sleep on his or her back on a firm mattress. The recommended sleeping position is the "feet to foot" method. This position prevents the baby from wriggling down beneath the sheets and covers. Your baby's feet should always be placed at the foot of the cot, with the bed coverings firmly tucked in, and covering the baby no higher than your baby’s shoulders. Always ensure your baby's face is uncovered.

Room Temperature & Bedding Requirements

Young babies cannot control their own body temperature well, which is why it's important to monitor the temperature of your baby’s room. This will help your baby sleep soundly and comfortably. Ensure your baby doesn't get too warm. It is particularly important to judge the amount of bedding your baby needs and this depends on the room temperature, which may change during the night. The ideal temperature for a nursery is 18°C/65°F.

Guide for Bedding

The amount of bedding and sleepwear you use for your baby should depend on the room temperature. The Living Textiles bedding guide above outlines the recommended levels of bedding for various room temperatures. The table is a guide only. It's recommended you check the temperature of your baby regularly by feeling his or her back. Your baby’s skin should feel warm, not hot and sweaty, or cold. Add a layer of clothing or bedding if baby feels cold, and remove a layer if baby feels hot. Remember that a blanket doubled over counts as two layers.

Practical Blankets for Every Season

Waffle-weave blanket – The waffle weave provides a comfortable level of warmth whilst releasing excess heat by allowing optimal air circulation. It is ideal for year-round use in most climates.
Cellular blanket (or hospital blankets) – The Living Textiles cellular blanket is designed specifically for babies, featuring small cells (holes) to ensure it won't snag little fingers. It also allows the blanket to keep its shape, withstanding constant use and washing (when care instructions are followed).
Brushed cotton blanket – Brushed on both sides, this cotton blanket is luxuriously soft. It provides a higher level of warmth and is ideal for cooler months.
